The 2020 FCSM Research and Policy Conference will focus on several aspects of the Federal Statistical System’s role in helping agencies and the public meet the demands of evidence-based policymaking. This year’s policy sessions will focus on the Evidence Act and using statistical data for evaluation purposes. The research sessions will highlight the work being done on nonresponse bias, administrative data and several other topics.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. John Friedman, Brown University. Dr. Friedman will be addressing the question: “Using Federal Data to Evaluate and Inform: A Case Study on Increasing Upward Mobility in the U.S.” Dr. Friedman is a professor of economics, international affairs and public policy, and is the founding co-director of Opportunity Insights at Harvard University. His body of work demonstrates the valuable research that he and his team have conducted by leveraging secure access to a broad set of federal data. Dr. Brown’s research informs a vision for the role of statistical agencies and units as pivotal actors in the broader Federal evidence building ecosystem. This ecosystem has the opportunity to make the creation of new insights to drive better policy and outcomes a routine part of government activity. Many of the subsequent conference sessions will dive into different aspects of this vision.
