December 2021 Stakeholder Update

The 2021 FCSM Research & Policy Conference has recently concluded. Slides from the over 225 presentations at the conference are currently available at the FCSM Fall 2021 Conference Program.

COPAFS is organizing a Working Group focused on reviving the National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF) at the National Center for Education Statistics. The survey employs a nationally representative sample of full-and part-time faculty and instructional staff at public and private not-for-profit 2- and 4-year institutions in the United States. It is designed to provide data about faculty and instructional staff to postsecondary education researchers and policymakers. November 2021 Stakeholder Update

The 2021 FCSM Research & Policy Conference has recently concluded. Slides from the over 225 presentations at the conference are currently available at the FCSM Fall 2021 Conference Program.

On November 15, COPAFS signed onto a letter asking Congress to complete negotiations on USICA/NSF for the Future. Congress passed both of these bills with strong bipartisan support. Yet, since passing the legislation, Congress has not moved to finalize completion. October 2021 Stakeholder Update

On October 28, COPAFS signed on to a letter from Census Project to the leaders of the House and Senate Appropriations Committee urging them to provide no less than the amount that the House approved for the Census Bureau in the final FY 2022 CJS measure. The letter also urges Congress to consider going higher than that amount to support a variety of pressing operational priorities, including the 2022 Economic Census, American Community Survey, and Pulse Surveys…. August 2021 Stakeholder Update

The 2021 FCSM Research and Policy Conference has been converted to a virtual event due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the DC area. There are close to 200 papers being presented in 52 sessions during the course of the conference which runs from November 2 – 4, 2021. The FCSM Program has been finalized and registration for the event is open. The Plenary Speaker is Dr. Helen Nissenbaum, Professor of Information Science at Cornell Tech. July 2021 Stakeholder Update

On July 27, 2021, COPAFS signed on to support the Improving Justice through Science Act, which would permanently reestablish the Science Advisory Board (SAB) in the Department of Justice which will be introduced by Senator Schatz. May 2021 Stakeholder Update

On May 19, 2021, COPAFS submitted testimony with specific funding requests for NCHS, NCES, and BLS to the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. COPAFS urged the Subcommittee to adopt the following funding recommendations in FY22: $200 million, NCHS; $300 million, NCES; and $800 million, BLS. April 2021 Stakeholder Update

On March 29, COPAFS joined nearly 20 other organizations in signing a letter recommending an appropriation of at least $200 million for the National Center for Health Statistics in FY22. The letter from the Friends of NCHS goes on to outline important initiatives occurring at the agency and how the additional funding will be utilized. March 2021 Stakeholder Update

In Memoriam: Jinney Smith (1971 – 2021), Next COPAFS Quarterly Meeting: Friday June 4, 2021. There were 37 federal register notices posted by federal statistical agencies from February 26, 2021 to March 25, 2021. The Data Foundation is sponsoring the COVID-19 Household Impact Survey funded in part by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and administered by NORC at the University of Chicago. This survey is a philanthropic effort to provide national and regional statistics about health, the economy, and social dynamics in the United States during this pandemic.
