Agency Releases

Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC)

  • On August 25, Gross Domestic Product (Second Estimate) and Corporate Profits (Preliminary), Second Quarter 2022 were released. Real gross domestic product (GDP) decreased at an annual rate of 0.6 percent in the second quarter of 2022. In the first quarter, real GDP decreased 1.6 percent. The GDP estimate is based on more complete source data than were available for the “advance” estimate issued last month.  In the advance estimate, the decrease in real GDP was 0.9 percent. The update primarily reflects upward revisions to consumer spending and private inventory investment that were partly offset by a downward revision to residential fixed investment.
  • On August 19, Activities of US Affiliates of Foreign Multinational Enterprises, 2020 was released. Majority-owned U.S. affiliates (MOUSAs) of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) employed 7.86 million workers in the United States in 2020, a 2.8 percent decrease from 8.08 million workers in 2019, according to statistics on MOUSA operations and finances. MOUSAs accounted for 6.4 percent of total private-industry employment in the United States in 2020, up from 6.1 percent in 2019, as total private-industry employment fell more than MOUSA employment. By industry, employment by MOUSAs was largest in manufacturing and in retail trade. MOUSAs with ultimate owners in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany were the largest contributors to total MOUSA employment.

Economic Research Service (USDA)

  • In August, a report on China’s Import Potential for Beek, Corn, Pork, and Wheat was released. China’s beef prices were about 80–90 percent higher than U.S. imported beef prices in 2020 despite rapid growth in imports. Even with China’s record-level corn imports in 2020, the country’s domestic prices were still 60 percent above average imported U.S. corn prices. The margin between China’s and imported U.S. pork prices soared to 200–300 percent of U.S. prices, due largely to a disease-driven reduction in China’s domestic pork supplies in 2020.
  • In August, Time Series Methods for Forecasting and Modeling Uncertainty in the Food Price Outlook was released. This study found substantial gains in forecasting accuracy from implementing time-series econometric techniques, as measured by root-mean-squared error values. Moreover, the new statistical methods (hereafter referred to as “time-series approach”) led to several qualitative benefits and improvements to the efficiency of developing the FPO forecasts. In addition to enhancing standardization, transparency, and reproducibility, the study results indicate the time-series approach may advance the representation of uncertainty about forecasts in a variety of ways.

Energy Information Administration (DOE)

  • On August 29, the Coal Data Browser and Electricity Data Browser were released.
  • On August 22, the OPEC Revenues Fact Sheet was released. OPEC members earned about $570 billion in net oil export revenue (in 2021 dollars) in 2021. OPEC’s 2021 net revenue is a 78% increase from 2020, when OPEC net oil export revenue totaled an estimated $320 billion, which was the lowest revenue since 2003. The increase in net export revenue in 2021 can be attributed to a combination of increased OPEC production and higher crude oil prices during the year. In 2021, OPEC increased production as OPEC+ production targets rose; total liquids production among all OPEC producers rose to 31.7 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2021 from 30.7 million b/d in 2020. Crude oil prices also rose as global oil consumption outpaced oil production, resulting in persistent withdrawals from global oil inventories. The increase in oil consumption in 2021 occurred as economic activity increased and the global economy began to return to pre-COVID-19 conditions.

 National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA)

  • On August 29, details for the upcoming 2022 Census of Agriculture were released. The 2022 Census of Agriculture will be mailed in phases, starting with an invitation to respond online in November followed by paper questionnaires in December. Farm operations of all sizes, urban and rural, which produced and sold, or normally would have sold, $1,000 or more of agricultural product in 2022 are included in the ag census. “Census of Agriculture data are widely used by federal and local governments, agribusinesses, trade associations, extension educators, and many others to inform decisions about policy and farm programs and services that aid producers and rural communities,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “By responding to the Census of Agriculture – by being represented in these important data – producers are literally helping to shape their futures.”
  • On August 12, the Crop Production Report was released. The report forecasted corn production down from 2021 and soybean production up from last year. Corn production is down 5% from last year, forecast at 14.4 billion bushels; soybean growers are expected to increase their production 2% from 2021, forecast at 4.53 billion bushels. Average corn yield is forecast at 175.4 bushels per acre, down 1.6 bushels from last year. NASS forecasts record-high yields in California, Iowa, Washington, and Wisconsin. Acres planted to corn, at 89.8 million, are down 4% from 2021. As of July 31, 61% of this year’s corn crop was reported in good or excellent condition, 1 percentage point below the same time last year.

The total number of students reported to be attending public elementary and secondary schools in the United States in fall 2021 was unchanged compared to fall 2020, according to preliminary data released today by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES). “Compared with fall 2020, total public school enrollment in prekindergarten through grade 12 was unchanged in fall 2021, with 49.4 million students enrolled in fall 2020 and 49.5 million students in fall 2021,” said NCES Commissioner Peggy G. Carr. “However, there were changes in enrollment when you look at individual grade levels. Prekindergarten enrollment rose by 14 percent, and enrollment of kindergarteners rose by 5 percent, while public school enrollment counts in each of the grades 1 through 7 decreased.”
  • On August 23, the 2021-2022 IPEDS Fall Data Release – Provisional Release was made public.

Following declines in birth rates for most age groups from 2019 to 2020, birth rates declined for age groups 15–19 and 20–24 and rose for age groups 25–29, 30–34, 35–39, and 40–44 between 2020 and 2021.
  • On August 11, Organized Sports Participation Among Children Aged 6-17 Years: US, 2020 was released. In 2020, 54.1% of children aged 6–17 years participated in sports during the past 12 months. The higher the level of parents’ education, the more likely children and adolescents were to participate in sports. As family income increased, the more likely children and adolescents were to participate in sports.

National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NSF)

  • On August 29, Digitization, Cloud Computing, and Innovation in US Businesses was released. This working paper examines differences in the rate of digitalization across industry, firm size class, and location along with how digitalization and cloud computing is associated with different types of innovation. Digitalization—the conversion of text, pictures, video, or sound into a digital form that can be processed by a computer and often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution—has been occurring since the widespread adoption of computers by businesses. The introduction of cloud computing can help to accelerate the digital transition by replacing large capital expenditures on information technology (IT) with IT infrastructure, support, and software as a pay-as-you-go service. The introduction of the cloud may thus reduce the cost of experimenting with new ways of doing business reliant on digitalization, and this phenomenon may be observed in the data on innovation.
  • On August 9, the Baccalaureate Origins of Underrepresented Minority Research Doctorate Recipients was released. Extending prior analyses, this InfoBrief examines the baccalaureate origins of doctorate recipients from 2010–20 by citizenship status, race, and ethnicity. Black, Hispanic, and AIAN doctorate recipients from 2010–20 disproportionately earned a bachelor’s degree from minority-serving institutions, underscoring the importance of these colleges and universities for enhancing the diversity of the U.S. research enterprise. Although most Black and Hispanic doctorate recipients earned a bachelor’s degree from public colleges and universities, a higher proportion of Black and Hispanic students with undergraduate degrees from private colleges and universities went on to earn a research doctorate.
