Agency Releases

Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC)

On October 27, Gross Domestic Product, Third Quarter 2022 (Advance Estimate) was released. Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.6 percent in the third quarter of 2022. In the second quarter, real GDP decreased 0.6 percent. The increase in real GDP reflected increases in exports, consumer spending, nonresidential fixed investment, federal government spending, and state and local government spending, that were partly offset by decreases in residential fixed investment and private inventory investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, decreased.
On October 5, US International Trade in Goods and Services, August 2022 was released. The goods and services deficit was $67.4 billion in August, down $3.1 billion from $70.5 billion in July, revised. August exports were $258.9 billion, $0.7 billion less than July exports. August imports were $326.3 billion, $3.7 billion less than July imports. The August decrease in the goods and services deficit reflected a decrease in the goods deficit of $3.4 billion to $87.6 billion and a decrease in the services surplus of $0.4 billion to $20.2 billion.

Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ)

On October 27, Human Trafficking Data Collection Activities, 2022 was released. A total of 2,198 persons were referred to U.S. Attorneys for human trafficking offenses in fiscal year 2020, a 62% increase from the 1,360 persons referred in 2011. The number of persons prosecuted for human trafficking increased from 729 in 2011 to 1,343 in 2020, an 84% increase. The number of persons convicted of a federal human trafficking offense increased from 2011 (464 persons) to 2019 (837 persons), before falling in 2020 (658 persons).
On October 5, The National Crime Victimization Survey and National Incident-Based Reporting System: A complementary picture of crime in 2021 was released. This report describes the similarities and differences between the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), sponsored by BJS, and the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The NCVS and NIBRS measure a set of crime offenses that overlap but are not identical, which leads to differences in estimates between the two data sources. The NCVS interviews victims on crimes both reported and not reported to police, while NIBRS collects data on crime recorded by law enforcement agencies.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (DOL)

On October 26, Business Employment Dynamics – First Quarter 2022 was released. From December 2021 to March 2022, gross job gains from opening and expanding private-sector establishments were 8.4 million, a decrease of 1.1 million jobs from the previous quarter. Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 6.9 million, an increase of 205,000 jobs from the previous quarter. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment gain of 1.5 million jobs in the private sector during the first quarter of 2022.
On October 18, Usual Weekly Earnings of Wage and Salary Workers – Third Quarter 2022 was released. Median weekly earnings of the nation’s 120.2 million full-time wage and salary workers were $1,070 in the third quarter of 2022 (not seasonally adjusted). This was 6.9 percent higher than a year earlier, compared with a gain of 8.3 percent in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the same period.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (DOT)

On October 18, the US Average Domestic Fares – Second Quarter 2022 was released. The average U.S. domestic air fare increased in the second quarter of 2022 to $397, up 17.4% from the first quarter 2022 inflation-adjusted fare of $338. Adjusted for inflation (constant 2022 dollars), the average 2Q 2022 air fare was up 34.6% from $295 in the first full quarter (Q2) of the pandemic in 2020 and down 2.1% from pre-pandemic Q4 2019 ($406). Adjusted for inflation, the second quarter 2022 fare is up 22.0% from the second quarter 2021 fare of $326. In the second quarter 2022, passenger demand increased with U.S. airlines reporting 85.3 million originating passengers, up 641.74% from 11.5 million passengers in second quarter of 2020.
On October 25, North American Transborder Freight – August 2022 was released. Total transborder freight came to $140.3 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, which was up 24.1% compared to August 2021. Freight between the U.S. and Canada totaled $70.0 billion, up 23.3% from August 2021. Freight between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $70.3 billion, up 24.9% from August 2021.

Census Bureau (DOC)

On October 31, the 2020 Census Quality Metrics Viewer was released. This map provides a visual tool for exploring the recently released operational quality metrics for counties and census tracts. The metrics show how the 2020 Census collected data within the counties and census tracts and can provide insight on the quality of the census.
On October 18, the 2022 Economic Census kicked off with a mailing to selected small businesses asking them to update their North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code. NAICS codes are the standard used by federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

Economic Research Service (USDA)

In October, Foreign Direct Investment in Africa was released. This report examines emerging trends in FDI in Africa that may further shift under AfCFTA, including assessing the sources and destinations of private investment in the region. European investors remain the most important source of FDI stock in Africa, but the relative share of Africa’s FDI stock originating from Europe declined over the past decade, while Asia’s share increased. The study also covers U.S. FDI in Africa.

Energy Information Administration (DOE)

On October 31, US Movements of Crude Oil by Rail was released. This release includes data through August 2022.
On October 18, the Annual Coal Report, 2021 was released. U.S. coal production increased 7.8% year over year to 577.4 million short tons (MMst). The total productive capacity of U.S. coal mines was 871 MMst, a decrease of 6.6% from the 2020 level. The average number of employees at U.S. coal mines decreased by 2,641 from the 2020 level to 39,518 employees.

National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA)

On October 28, it was announced that the Cost of Pollination Survey would be reinstated. The survey was suspended on December 6, 2018. NASS has mailed the questionnaires and will collect data immediately. The report, to be published on Jan. 11, 2023, will include data for 2017 and 2022 reference dates, including paid pollinated acres, price per acre, colonies used, price per colony, and total value of pollination per crop.
On October 12, the Crop Production Report was released. Corn production is down 8% from last year, forecast at 13.9 billion bushels; soybean growers are expected to decrease their production 3% from 2021, forecast at 4.31 billion bushels. Based on conditions as of Oct. 1, corn yields are expected to average 171.9 bushels per harvested acre, down 0.6 bushel from the previous forecast and down 4.8 bushels from 2021. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 80.8 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast.

National Center for Education Statistics (DOEd)

On October 17, the Technical Report and User Guide for the 2019 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) was released. The U.S. TIMSS 2019 Technical Report and User’s Guide provides an overview of the design and implementation of TIMSS 2019 in the United States and includes guidance for researchers using the U.S. datasets. This information is meant to supplement the IEA’s TIMSS 2019 Technical Report and TIMSS 2019 User Guide by describing those aspects of TIMSS 2019 that are unique to the United States including information on merging the U.S. public- and restricted-use student, teacher, and school data files with the U.S. data files in the international database.

National Center for Health Statistics (CDC)

On October 28, COVID-19 Mortality by Usual Occupation and Industry: 46 States and New York City, United States 2020 was released. COVID-19 death rates and PMRs showed differences across usual occupations and industries in 2020. Workers in protective service occupations (60.3 per 100,000 workers, 95% confidence interval: 53.5–67.2) and accommodation and food services industries (55.0, 51.1–58.9) experienced the highest death rates. The highest PMRs were observed among decedents in community and social services occupations (158.5, 151.4–165.7) and in transportation and warehousing (119.3, 116.3–122.2), healthcare and social assistance (118.7, 116.3–121.1), and administrative, support, and waste services (118.3, 114.5–122.1) industries.
On October 13, Telemedicine Use Among Adults: United States, 2021 was released. In 2021, 37.0% of adults used telemedicine in the past 12 months. Telemedicine use increased with age, and was higher among women (42.0%) compared with men (31.7%). Non-Hispanic White (39.2%) and non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native (40.6%) adults were more likely to use telemedicine compared with Hispanic (32.8%), non-Hispanic Black (33.1%), and non-Hispanic Asian (33.0%) adults.I

National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NSF)

On October 18, 2021 Doctorate Recipients from US Universities data tables were released.
On October 4, an InfoBrief was released that showed businesses spent $538 billion on research and development performance in the United States in 2020, a 9.1% increase from 2019. Funding from the companies’ own sources was $466 billion in 2020, an 8.7% increase from 2019. Funding from other sources was $71 billion, an 11.7% increase from 2019. These increases follow a 2-year period of double-digit annual growth in the level of national domestic R&D performance, which is especially notable because of the low rate of inflation during the period 2017–20.

Statistics of Income Division (IRS)

In October, Tax-Exempt Bonds, Calendar Year 2019 was released. Updated tax‐exempt bond data for governmental and private activity bonds issued in Calendar Year 2019 are now available on Tax Stats, along with data on the terms of issue, purpose, bond size, and uses of bond proceeds. A new table showing reissuances for Tax‐Exempt Private Activity Bonds issued in Calendar Year 2019 is also included.
