New Federal Statistics Resource Launched: statspolicy.gov
A new resource for federal statistics was launched on April 24: StatsPolicy|gov. This site will serve as the new home of the Federal Statistical System.
The site will serve as a new avenue to share key information, resources, and news about the Federal Statistical System, the Office of the Chief Statistician of the United States, the Interagency Council on Statistical Policy, and much more with the public.
Information you will find on the site includes:
- An overview of the Federal Statistical System, Office of the Chief Statistician of the US, Interagency Council on Statistical Policy, Principal Statistical Agencies and Recognized Units, and Cross-System Initiatives;
- Recent community news and events;
- Relevant laws, policies, and guidance;
- Statistical system-wide products and reports, including the Blue Book; the AP Stats chapters; select ICSP products; and
- Links to the Federal Data Catalog and the Standard Application Process which is used to gain access to restricted or confidential data.

Agency Releases
Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC)
- On April 27, GDP, First Quarter 2023 (Advance Estimate) was released. Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 1.1 percent in the first quarter of 2023, according to the “advance” estimate. In the fourth quarter of 2022, real GDP increased 2.6 percent. The increase in the first quarter primarily reflected an increase in consumer spending that was partly offset by a decrease in inventory investment.
- On April 5, US International Trade in Goods and Services, February 2023 was released. The goods and services deficit was $70.5 billion in February, up $1.9 billion from $68.7 billion in January, revised.
Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ)
- On April 14, Arrest History of Persons Admitted to State Prison in 2009 and 2014 was released. More than 1 in 4 persons admitted to state prison in 34 states in 2014 had been sentenced for a violent offense. The 369,200 persons admitted to state prison in 34 states in 2014 had an estimated 4.2 million prior arrests in their criminal histories, including the arrest that resulted in their prison sentence. In both 2009 and 2014, persons admitted to prison had a median of nine prior arrests in their criminal histories.
- On April 12, Opioid Use Disorder Screening and Treatment in Local Jails, 2019 was released. At midyear 2019, more than 6 in 10 (63%) local jail jurisdictions reported that they conducted opioid use disorder (OUD) screenings of persons at intake, and fewer than 2 in 10 (19%) jurisdictions said that they initiated medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for those identified as having OUD. Between June 1 and June 30, 2019, about 80% of persons admitted to local jails in the Northeast, 68% in the West, 62% in the South, and 61% in the Midwest were screened for opioid use disorder (OUD).
Bureau of Labor Statistics (DOL)
- On April 26, College Enrollment and Work Activity of Recent High School and College Graduates – 2022 was released. Among recent high school graduates ages 16 to 24, college enrollment rates for men and women were 57.2 percent and 66.1 percent, respectively. Among 16- to 24-year-olds, 41.9 percent of recent high school dropouts were working or looking for work, lower than the labor force participation rate of 69.2 percent for recent high school graduates not enrolled in college. About 16.8 million persons ages 16 to 24 were not enrolled in school–44.1 percent of all persons in this age group.
- On April 25, Occupational Employment and Wages – May 2022 was released. Computer and mathematical occupations had employment of 5.0 million in May 2022, representing 3.4 percent of total national employment. The largest computer and mathematical occupations were software developers (1.5 million) and computer user support specialists (696,830). The annual mean wage across all computer and mathematical occupations was $108,130, compared with the U.S. average wage of $61,900.
Bureau of Transportation Statistics (DOT)
- On April 18, US Annual Average Domestic Fares – 2022 was released. The 2022 annual average domestic itinerary air fare of $378 increased 14.1% from the 2021 inflation-adjusted annual fare of $332. The 2022 annual fare was down 6.2% from 2019, the last full pre-pandemic calendar year ($403). In 2022, 317.9 million originating passengers traveled on U.S. airlines, up from 243.8 million in 2021 and 130.8 million in 2020, and down from 331.3 million in 2019.
- On April 26, North American Transborder Freight – February 2023 was released. Total transborder freight: $119.9 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 6.6% compared to February 2022. Freight between the U.S. and Canada totaled $59.3 billion, up 5.5% from February 2022. Freight between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $60.6 billion, up 7.8% from February 2022
Census Bureau (DOC)
- On April 27, the 2021 County Business Patterns (CBP) was released. These data show detailed annual information on the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, and first quarter and annual payroll at the national, state, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical area, combined statistical area, and county and congressional district levels for nearly 1,000 industries defined by the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). CBP also includes data for Puerto Rico and the Island Areas at the state and county equivalent levels.
- On April 27, the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) was released. The BTOS is the successor to the Small Business Pulse Survey (SBPS), a high-frequency survey that measured the effect of changing business conditions during the coronavirus pandemic and other major events like hurricanes on our nation’s small businesses.
Economic Research Service (USDA)
- On April 27, Estimating the State-Level Food Expenditure Series Report was The FES provides users with data to evaluate changes in food spending and its composition at the national level. This report presents methodology and source data used to generate State-level FES estimates. The newly developed State-level FES provides information about consumer food acquisitions and spending behavior across States and time and can improve the understanding of whether certain policies or shocks (e.g., economic recessions, tax policies, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic) have different effects on food spending at the State level.
- On April 12, Trends in US Whole-Grain Intakes 1994-2018: The Roles of Age, Food Source, and School Food was released. During the years studied, U.S. consumers 2 years old and over consumed an average of approximately 2,000 calories daily; therefore, the authors compared whole grain density of diets to a benchmark standard of 1.5-ounce equivalents of whole grains per 1,000 calories to represent the whole grain recommended amounts across all calorie levels. In 1994–98, whole-grain intakes by U.S. residents 2 years old and over were 0.4-ounce equivalents per 1,000 calories; in 2017–18, intakes were 0.43-ounce equivalents per 1,000 calories, an increase of less than 0.05-ounce equivalents per 1,000 calories over two decades.
Energy Information Administration (DOE)
- On April 25, Monthly Energy Review was released. A publication of recent and historical energy statistics. This publication includes total energy production, consumption, stocks, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions values.
- On April 28, Company Level Imports – February 2023 was released. Monthly data on the origins of crude oil imports in February 2023 show that one country, Canada, exported more than one million barrels per day to the United States (see table below). The top five exporting countries accounted for 87% of United States crude oil imports in February while the top ten sources accounted for approximately 97% of all U.S. crude oil imports. The top five sources of U.S. crude oil imports for February were Canada (4.1 million b/d), Mexico (790,000 b/d), Saudi Arabia (388,000 b/d), Iraq (298,000 b/d), and Colombia (201,000 b/d).
National Center for Education Statistics (IES)
- On April 14, the Public Use Data Files for the 2019-20 Public School Use of Educational Technology for Instruction Study were released. The public-use data file and related data documentation provide nationally representative data from elementary and secondary public schools about their use of technology for teaching and learning during the 2019–20 school year. Data were collected in the spring of 2020 from approximately 800 schools. Questions were asked about conditions before the coronavirus pandemic started. Schools that completed the survey after the coronavirus pandemic started were asked to report about pre-pandemic experiences.
National Center for Health Statistics (CDC)
- In April, Interactive Quarterly Early Release Estimate for NHIS 2019-22 were released. All estimates are unadjusted percentages based on preliminary data files and are released prior to final data editing and final weighting to provide access to the most recent information from the NHIS. Estimates presented here are based on quarterly data.
- On April 25, Work Conditions and Serious Psychological Distress Among Working Adults Aged 18-64: US, 2021 was released. In 2021, working adults aged 18–64 who usually worked the evening or night shift (4.8%) or a rotating shift (3.9%) were more likely to experience serious psychological distress compared with day shift workers (2.3%). The percentage of workers experiencing serious psychological distress increased as monthly variation in earnings increased
National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NSF)
- On April 17, a new analysis of the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities was released. The analysis shows federal obligations for R&D to Nonprofit Organizations by selected Agencies for FY2020.
Statistics of Income (IRS)
- In April, the 2022 IRS Data Book was released. This publication provides a snapshot of agency activities for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 (Oct. 1, 2021 — Sept. 30, 2022). In addition to information on taxes collected and returns processed, the report also includes information about taxpayer assistance, enforcement, and the IRS budget and workforce, among others. For example, the IRS collected more than $4.9 trillion in gross taxes. The agency processed more than 262.8 million federal tax returns during FY 2022 and issued more than $641.7 billion in tax refunds. The IRS assisted more than 71.6 million taxpayers through correspondence, its enterprise-wide telephone helplines, or at Taxpayer Assistance Centers. Additionally, the agency provided self-assistance to taxpayers through nearly 1.1 billion visits to IRS.gov, including inquiries to the “Where’s My Refund?” application and via the IRS2GO mobile app.
