  • On May 17, State Employment and Unemployment Summary – April 2024 was released. Unemployment rates were lower in April in 5 states, higher in 2 states, and stable in 43 states and the District of Columbia. Thirty states had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 1 state had a decrease, and 19 states and the District had little change. • On May 15, Consumer Price Index Summary – April 2024 was released. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in April on a seasonally adjusted basis, after rising 0.4 percent in March. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.4 percent before seasonal adjustment. The index for shelter rose in April, as did the index for gasoline. Combined, these two indexes contributed over seventy percent of the monthly increase in the index for all items. The energy index rose 1.1 percent over the month. The food index was unchanged in April. The food at home index declined 0.2 percent, while the food away from home index rose 0.3 percent over the month. Indexes which increased in April include shelter, motor vehicle insurance, medical care, apparel, and personal care. The indexes for used cars and trucks, household furnishings and operations, and new vehicles were among those that decreased over the month.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (DOT)

  • On May 15, the 2023 Scheduled Passenger Airlines Report was released. U.S. scheduled passenger airlines reported a 2023 after-tax net profit of $7.8 billion, and a pre-tax operating profit of $13.2 billion. In 2022 the net profit was $1.6 billion, which indicates airlines saw a significant increase in 2023. U.S. airline financial reports are filed quarterly with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
  • On May 17 it was reported that Docked Bikeshare Ridership increased in 2023. Most but not all docked bikeshare systems experienced an increase in ridership in 2023. In 2023, ridership declined 10% on Indego (serving Philadelphia, PA), 5% on BlueBikes (serving the Boston, MA metro area) and Bay Wheels (serving the San Francisco, CA area), and 1% on Divvy (serving Chicago, IL). With the exception of Bay Wheels, growth in years prior to 2023 more than offset the declines these four systems experienced during 2020, when COVID-19 significantly reduced ridership on nearly all systems. Ridership on BayWheels, on the other hand, was 4% percentage points below the 2019 level in 2023.

Census Bureau (DOC)

The number of country notifications to the World Trade Organization (WTO) of upcoming nondiscriminatory poultry NTMs increased from a low of 18 in 1997 to a peak of 849 in 2018. These poultry NTM notifications include sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, which are standards applied to international trade flows to ensure food safety and protect human, animal, or plant life or health, and technical barriers to trade (TBTs), which are regulations, standards, and procedures that define the characteristics a poultry product should have to enter into a specific market.
  • On May 1, Cover Crops on Livestock Operations: Potential for Expansion in the United States was released. Overall adoption of cover crops by cattle operations with cropland is relatively low and similar to all farms with harvested cropland (14 percent versus 12 percent in 2017). This may reflect barriers to adoption or a lack of knowledge or technical expertise about how to implement such systems. Dairy and feedlot operations with cropland are more than twice as likely to grow cover crops as operations with cattle and cropland overall (33 percent of dairy operations and 27 percent of feedlot operations in 2017 versus 14 percent of cattle operations with cropland overall).

In 2022, this sector performed an estimated $692.7 billion in domestic R&D (current U.S. dollars), or 78% of U.S. R&D, a 14% increase from the $608.6 billion performed in 2021 (6% increase in constant dollars).
