COPAFS News

COPAFS is organizing a Working Group focused on reviving the National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF) at the National Center for Education Statistics. The survey employs a nationally representative sample of full-and part-time faculty and instructional staff at public and private not-for-profit 2- and 4-year institutions in the United States. It is designed to provide data about faculty and instructional staff to postsecondary education researchers and policymakers. The survey was initially conducted during the 1987-88 school year and repeated in 1992–93, 1998–99, and 2003–04. It has been 18 years since it was last administered. This position is located within the Office of the Commissioner (OC) in the National Center for Education Statistics, Institute of Education Sciences (IES), Department of Education (ED) in Washington, DC. NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education in the U.S. and other nations. Agency Releases

Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC)

• On January 27, GDP, Fourth Quarter and Year 2021 (Advance Estimate) was released. Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 6.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to the “advance” estimate. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 2.3 percent. The GDP estimate is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency. The “second” estimate for the fourth quarter, based on more complete data, will be released on February 24, 2022.
• On January 6, US International Trade in Goods and Services, November 2021 was released. The goods and services deficit was $80.2 billion in November, up $13.0 billion from $67.2 billion in October, revised.

Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ)

• In January, the Federal Criminal Case Processing Statistics (FCCPS) Tool received an update with 2019 data. The Federal Criminal Case Processing Statistics (FCCPS) data tool is an interface that can be used to analyze federal case processing data. Users can generate various statistics in the areas of federal law enforcement, prosecution/courts, and incarceration for the years between 1998 and 2019. Users can also look up data based on title and section of the U.S. Criminal Code for the years between 1994 and 2019. This data tool includes offenders held for violating federal laws.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (DOL)

• On January 28, the Employment Cost Index (December 2021 was released. Compensation costs for civilian workers increased 1.0 percent, seasonally adjusted, for the 3-month period ending in December 2021. Wages and salaries increased 1.1 percent and benefit costs increased 0.9 percent from September 2021. Compensation costs for civilian workers increased 4.0 percent for the 12-month period ending in December 2021 and increased 2.5 percent in December 2020. Wages and salaries increased 4.5 percent for the 12-month period ending in December 2021 and increased 2.6 percent for the 12-month period ending in December 2020. Benefit costs increased 2.8 percent over the year and increased 2.3 percent for the 12-month period ending in December 2020.
• On January 25, State Employment and Unemployment (December 2021) was released. Unemployment rates were lower in December in 42 states and the District of Columbia and stable in 8 states. Forty- eight states and the District had jobless rate decreases from a year earlier and two states were little changed. The national unemployment rate, 3.9 percent, declined by 0.3 percentage point over the month and was 2.8 points lower than in December 2020.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (DOT)

• On January 26, Air Travel Consumer Report: November 2021 was released. The COVID-19 pandemic continued to result in significant changes to airline schedules and operations in November 2021. The 573,134 flights operated in November 2021 were 88.2% of the 649,511 flights operated in pre-pandemic November 2019. Operated flights in November 2021 were up 47.9% year-over-year from the 387,481 flights operated in November 2020 and down 1.7% month-over-month from the 582,759 flights operated in October 2021.
• On January 19, Third Quarter 2021 Air Fare Tables were released. The average U.S. domestic air fare increased in the third quarter of 2021 to $314, up 3.2% from the inflation-adjusted fare of $305 in the second quarter and up 4.7% from the unadjusted second-quarter fare of $300. Adjusted for inflation (constant 2021 dollars), the average 3Q 2021 air fare was up 22.0% from $258 in the same quarter of 2020 and down 14.7% from pre-pandemic Q3 2019 ($368).

Census Bureau (DOC)

• On January 19, Household Pulse Survey Phase 3.3 Monthly Data Release was announced. HPS results are available through the Household Pulse Survey Interactive Tool, detailed tables, and a public-use data file on census.gov. They are also available in the Vaccination Tracker, which allows users to explore changes in vaccination rates and hesitancy for the nation, states and select population characteristics.
• On January 27, it was announced that the 1950 Census Records would be released on April 1, 2022. This release is in accordance with the “72-Year Rule” (92 Stat. 915; Public Law 95-416; October 5, 1978) that states that after 72 years, NARA is responsible for releasing to the public decennial census records.

Economic Research Service (USDA)

• In January, COVID-19 Working Paper: U:S-Mexico Agricultural Trade in 2020 was released. Overall, U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico declined in April 2020 and did not recover until November 2020. Meanwhile, U.S. agricultural imports from Mexico declined in April and May 2020 before resuming their long-term upward trend. Beef and veal, cotton, and pork were the U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico with the largest decreases in export value between calendar years 2019 and 2020.

Energy Information Administration (DOE)

• On January 28, State Energy Data System (SEDS): 2020 was updated to show estimates by energy source. New releases of energy consumption, price, and expenditure estimates by energy source. A set of updated data files is presented under Data files. The “2020P” in the data_status field indicates that these are “in progress” estimates generated from the 2020 data cycle. These files incorporate the latest estimates and revisions that have been processed in SEDS. They are updated every time a new set of SEDS estimates is released.

National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA)

• On January 31, All Cattle and Calves Inventory – US: January 1 was released. There were 91.9 million head of cattle and calves on U.S. farms as of Jan. 1, 2022. There are 30.1 million beef cows in the United States as of Jan. 1, 2022, down 2% from last year. The number of milk cows in the United States decreased to 9.38 million. U.S. calf crop was estimated at 35.1 million head, down 1% from 2020.
• On January 25, it was announced that the first-ever National Agroforestry Survey will be conducted. Data collection begins Feb. 1 and concludes April 5, 2022. The survey will be sent to 11,100 farmers and ranchers nationwide to gather information on the five agroforestry practices used for climate, conservation and production benefits, including windbreaks, silvopasture, riparian forest buffers, alley cropping as well as forest farming and multi-story cropping.

National Center for Education Statistics (DOEd)

• On January 31, the 2020-21 Common Core of Data Universe Files were released. Data are reported at state, district, and school levels and include staff counts by professional category, and student membership disaggregated by grade, race/ethnicity, and sex. Also included are school-level counts of student eligible for free and reduced-price lunches.
• On January 31, the NALS 1992 Restricted Use File with Rescaled Literacy Scores was released. The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) was a national study that collected background demographic and skills information about U.S. adults in households and in prison. The NALS 1992 restricted-use files (RUF) with rescaled literacy scores contain individual unit data including both responses to the background questionnaire and the cognitive assessment from the NALS data collection, completed in 1992. The file contains rescaled plausible values for literacy and some trend background questionnaire items to allow for trend analysis with the U.S. Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) data.

National Center for Health Statistics (CDC)

• On January 26, Stressful Life Events Among Children Aged 5-17 Years by Disability Status: US 2019 was released. In 2019, 17.2% of children with disability had been exposed to violence in their neighborhood compared with 5.3% of children without disability. The percentage of children aged 5–17 years who had lived with a parent or guardian who served time in jail or prison was higher for children with disability. Among children aged 5–17 years, 21.6% of those with disability and 7.5% of those without disability had lived with someone who was mentally ill or severely depressed.
• On January 21, Exploring the Decline in the Singleton Preterm Birth Rate in the United States, 2019-2020 was released. Following increases from 2014 to 2019, the singleton preterm birth rate declined by less than 1% from 2019 (8.47%) to 2020 (8.42%). A decline was also observed for early preterm births between 2019 (2.14%) and 2020 (2.11%). The singleton preterm birth rate among births to non-Hispanic White mothers declined 1%; changes in rates for non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic American Indian Alaska Native, and Hispanic mothers were not significant.

National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NSF)

• On January 21, an InfoBrief showing that universities report growth in US Citizen and Permanent Resident Enrollment in Grad Programs. The coordinators were asked if enrollment and funding of graduate students from fall 2019 to fall 2020 were approximately stable, increased, decreased, or if they did not know. Their responses provided estimates of aggregate trends across schools. Coordinators’ responses also indicated a level of uncertainty—approximately 10%–12% of coordinators reported uncertainty about trends in U.S. citizen and permanent resident enrollment, 20%–23% on items related to temporary visa holder enrollment and financial support, and 11%–25% on questions related to graduate program policies at their schools.
• On January 18, Data Tables showing Federal R&D Funding by Budget Function for FY20-FY22 were released.

Statistics of Income Division (IRS)

• In January, Tax Exempt Bond Statistics were released. Updated tax-exempt bond data for private activity bonds issued in Calendar Year 2018 are now available on Tax Stats. An updated table showing the total Tax-Exempt Government Bonds issued in Calendar Year 2018 are included along with data on the term of issue, purpose, bond size, and uses of bond proceeds.
