Mark Calabria appointed as the Chief Statistician of the United States

On Thursday, July 10, OMB announced Mark Calabria was appointed as the Chief Statistician of the United States. Dr. Calabria currently serves as the Associate Director for Treasury, Housing, Commerce at OMB, a role he will continue in during his tenure as Chief Statistician. In a post on X, Dr. Calabria stated, “At least for a little while, a few extra responsibilities as Chief Statistician of the United States.” Dr. Karin Orvis will continue serving at OMB as the Branch Chief for Statistical and Social Policy. 

In light of this news, COPAFS would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Dr. Karin Orvis for her past three years of service as the Chief Statistician of the United States. She has proven to be an excellent partner in the COPAFS mission to ensure federal statistics remain transparent, reliable, timely, and granular. Her regular updates to COPAFS members on OMB activities and the federal statistical system were very informative. 

“From the beginning of her tenure in 2022,” said Paul Schroeder, COPAFS Executive Director, “Dr. Orvis has tackled this incredibly complex and demanding role admirably. She has helped to advance excellence in federal statistics via several initiatives which promoted transparency and the reliability of the federal statistical system. I thank Dr. Orvis for her dedication to America’s data infrastructure and appreciate her partnership with COPAFS which I hope will continue in her new role.”

Dr. Felice Levine, COPAFS Board Chair added, “I too want to thank Dr. Karin Orvis for extraordinary leadership as Chief Statistician of the United States for her deep understanding of and commitment to the role and functions of statistical agencies in the U.S. and worldwide, for public service marked by human kindness and decency to all, and for elevating through the trust regulations and otherwise the necessity of federal statistics of the highest quality, objectivity, and integrity.”

COPAFS looks forward to working with both Dr. Calabria and Dr. Orvis in advancing excellence in federal statistics.
