We are writing to express our strong support for the final report of the Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking released last week. We urge you to work closely with the Administration and Congress to implement the administrative and legislative policy recommendations included in it by the end of 2018.
We commend U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) for working together to create the Commission that received unanimous support from the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in March 2016. We also commend them for announcing legislation to enact many of the recommendations. Importantly, we applaud Commission Chair Katharine Abraham, Commission Co-Chair Ron Haskins and the 13 other Commissioners who developed and signed the final report. These actions demonstrate the strong and growing bipartisan commitment to
improving the lives of the American people through the increased use of data and evidence.
The Commission’s bipartisan recommendations would help make our government more effective and efficient by:
- Building evidence about the practices, policies and programs that will achieve the
most effective and efficient results so that policymakers can make better
decisions; - Investing limited taxpayer dollars in practices, policies and programs that use
data, evidence and evaluation to demonstrate they work; and - Directing funds away from practices, policies, and programs that consistently fail
to achieve measurable outcomes.
For all these reasons, we urge you to work closely with the Administration and Congress to implement the bipartisan recommendations in the final report of the Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking by the end of 2018.
