Objectives of the Friends of BLS

  • Build a strong network of BLS users to share information and ideas, amplifying the visibility and importance of BLS data.
  • Serve as a reservoir of experts and organizations who can educate policymakers and the public about BLS programs and their value.
  • Protect and strengthen BLS as a trusted national institution, ensuring it has the resources and independence needed to meet today’s challenges.

Long-Term Goals

  • Sustain an independent, nonpartisan advocacy presence for BLS.
  • Achieve stable and adequate federal funding for BLS programs.
  • Promote modernization initiatives (e.g., expanded administrative data use, faster releases, better tools for researchers and businesses).
  • Establish a self-sustaining funding model for Friends of BLS.

12 Month Goals

  • Prevent erosion of trust in BLS from political attacks or misinformation.
  • Improve funding prospects for BLS and support modernization of BLS programs.
  • Engage members and allies to actively advocate for BLS.
  • Secure funding for future years.

Role of Friends Outreach Specialist

Build relationships with Congressional offices and bipartisan champions for BLS funding and modernization. This goal includes developing strong relationships with key Members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and the key staff responsible for crafting BLS appropriations language.

Support the Steering Committee in issuing timely statements, press pieces, and social media campaigns that highlight the critical role of BLS data and address emergent issues.

Help update members, and launch subgroups for BLS alumni, business leaders, and state/local data users to deepen engagement. Coach members to connect with their Senators and Representatives. Work with the Steering Committee to launch an annual or semi-annual “fly in” of BLS supporters who will visit Hill offices in support of the Bureau.

Help raise funds for 2027 and develop a broad base of philanthropic and corporate support. Also work with the Steering Committee to develop a long-term funding plan and cultivate funders for sustained support.

Experience

  • 5-10 years of advocacy on the Hill
  • Strong relationships with both Republican and Democratic offices
  • Knowledge of the House/Senate Appropriations process and timeline
  • Knowledge of BLS data products and federal economic data

Pay: $62.00 – $65.00 per hour

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Washington, DC 20005
